Mr. Roof refers to master statuses and how it affects every other status that you have. According to Mr. Roof male and female is a master status, because it affects every other status that person has. For example in Paradise Lost, Adam and Eve posses the master status of male and female. This in turn affects how they are perceived in everything thing else they do. For example Eve's master status is that she is female, so since she is female she must be weaker, less intelligent and, more naive than man, which is how she is portrayed in Paradise Lost. In addition when Mr. Roof was talking about the "boxes" people are put in and the " boxes" that people put themselves in aslo connects to Paradise Lost. When Eve tries to tell Adam that she is strong enough to resist satan and that will make her more determined not to be tempted, she is trying to step out of the "box" that she is put in because her master status is that she is female. So Eve is defying that she is weaker, less intelligent and more naive, by stepping out of the "box" or master status.
